VOR antenna

Time: 1.25 hrs

Drilled out and filed the holes in the VS skins for the VOR antenna elements. I used a hole punch to punch a hole through some masking tape and used that on the VS rib so that I had a rough idea of where the hole needed to go. I then clecoed to skin to the frame and marked the holes and then did the same for the other side. After a bit of filing I finally got the antenna elements to fit.

That should get me close to the correct size hole to drill out

Still needs a little clean up.

VOR mounting plate and trim tab

Time: 2.0hrs

Fabricated the VOR mounting plate. I had purchase some T6 6061 0.81mm aluminum from Onlinemetals.com to use for the VOR mounting plate. The fabrication was pretty straight forward. I traced Rib 4 onto the aluminum sheet and then cut it with a Jigsaw. Then a lot of filing to get it to fit. I should have waited until I had made the plate to drill the main screw holes in the rib so that they would have lined up perfectly, instead they are a little off, but not too bad. I think it came out pretty good. I’m not much of a metal worker.

I will put some kind of strain relief for the RG400 cable that attaches to the antenna, but I’m not sure what I will do. Maybe I’ll make a simple bracket out of aluminum and put a grommet in it and rivet it to the rib/plate.

Next step is to rivet the plate to the rib and mount the VOR antenna to this assemble. Then I need to do the cut outs in the skin for the antenna elements.

Here’s the mounting plate fit inside the rib. Need to rivet it next.

Also worked on the Elevator trim tab. Riveted the piano hinge and control horn then filed and cleaned up some of the edges.

Vertical Stabilizer Rivnuts and VOR mounting

Time: 1.75

Installed the rivnuts on the vertical stabilizer parts. I used some high strength “red” lock tight on them (as suggested by Craig). Pretty easy to install these.

Also started to work on mounting the VOR antenna on RIB #4. I wasn’t supplied the mounting plate so I ordered some .81mm 6061 aluminum to make the plate. Will have to wait to work on that when the material arrives. It looks like the rivets are going to be a bit tough to get in near the antenna base. They will definitely need to be cut, but how much can they be cut? The VOR antenna is a RAMI AV-520 V STYLE VOR/LOC/GS ANTENNA I ordered from Aircraft Spruce (https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/ramiav520.php).
