About

This site is the build log for my Sling 4 project. I’m not a professional builder, in fact this is my first build and am learning as I go. Please make sure you think about what you are doing and don’t blindly follow what I’m doing here. I typically do a fair amount of research using other builder’s blogs and also local resources.

Now a little about me. I’m a computer software/systems engineer living in Southern California. I currently hold a private pilot certificate with an instrument rating. I obtained my certificate in 2008 and have experience in a few different aircraft. I did my private pilot work in a Cessna 172 and my instrument rating in a Cirrus SR20 (Avidyne Avionics). I have a bit of experience in a Diamond DA40 and the Sling 2. I’m part owner of a Grumman Tiger at Torrance Airport and also working on my Sling 4 in my garage. I’m married to a very tolerant wife with three beautiful daugthers.

If you’d like to contact me please feel free to send me an email at jpavlick@mymule.com. I’d love to hear from you regarding building or flying.

Could not find your email. I’m close to ordering the Sling 4 TSi. I currently one a 2008 Cessna Corvalis 400, however I’m looking to change to an experimental since most of my flying is now for fun instead of business.

Although I have been flying for over 40 years, I will do the Midwest quick build as I’m a software engineer with not much building experience.

Will you happen to be at Oshkosh this year?

    1. Hi Steve. No I don’t think I’ll be able to make it to Oshkosh this year, though I’d like to. My email should be on the site somewhere but if you want to email me, I t’s jpavlick@mymule.com. I’m a software engineer as well and this is my first build.

hullo Jim, I was talking to a friend of mine about the ELT antenna, he said that the instruction regarding the position of this is wrong and it should not go inside the cabin. He is putting his on the exterior toward the VS.

    1. Peter, Thanks for the comment. The TAF location isn’t so much wrong as it’s just not optimal. The canopy is fiberglass so it will not attenuated the signal that much. Putting it in the tail on the exterior would probably be best and is where it’s usually located. Unfortunately it would be very difficult for me to run wiring back there now. Also I don’t know if there is enough height in the tail faring to accommodate the height of the ELT antenna and the current antenna I have isn’t the type you would mount outside of the aircraft (would need a more aerodynamic one) so it would need to be mounted within the fiberglass fairing.
